Commanding Officer's Biography

Captain Michael Savageaux, USN

Captain Savageaux, a native of Grafton, Massachusetts, graduated with high distinction from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. In November 2002, he was awarded a Master of Arts in National Security Studies (with Distinction) from the Naval War College. He completed his Joint Training requirements and is designated as a Joint Qualified Officer.

Captain Savageaux’s sea tours began as a junior officer on board USS ASHEVILLE(SSN 758) where he served in a variety of division officer billets, deploying to the Western Pacific and the Arabian Gulf. He served as Navigator of USS TOLEDO(SSN 769), executing deployments to the North Atlantic and the Caribbean. As Executive Officer of USS SALT LAKE CITY (SSN 716) he completed a Western Pacific Deployment and an Arctic Inter-Fleet Transfer from San Diego to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. While in command the USS PITTSBURGH (SSN 720) from June 2009 to December 2012, the ship completed two six-month deployments, including operations in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Arabian Gulf. The ship was awarded the Commander, Submarine Squadron 2 Battle “E” for 2010.

Captain Savageaux’s shore assignments include a tour as the Torpedo and Countermeasures Projects Officer for Commander, Submarine Development Squadron Twelve; Combatant Commander’s Lead Planner for Commander, United States Southern Command; Deputy Director of the Center for Expeditionary Counterterrorism Operations; and Deputy for Readiness for Submarine SquadronTWO. He most recently served as the Director of Training for Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT. Captain Savageaux assumed the duties of Commanding Officer, Officer Training Command Newport in May 2016 and is now the Professor of Naval Science at the Boston Naval ROTC Consortium.

Captain Savageaux is entitled to wear the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), and several unit and service awards.
