Life in the Battalion - Academic Year

The first priorities for midshipmen are academic performance and leadership development. Due to the academic rigor of the universities represented in the Old Ironsides Battalion, students quickly learn to balance NROTC commitments with their scholastic workloads.

Weekly battalion operations include physical training, Leadership Lab, and Naval Science courses. Marine Option midshipmen participate in a leadership development and physical fitness program in which interested Navy Option midshipmen are also welcome to participate. Most students find that participation in NROTC is approximately a 10-hour-per-week obligation.

Midshipmen participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. They are active members of the campus community - varsity athletes, student organization leaders, and members of Greek organizations. The Battalion organizes additional military activities for students' enjoyment, including athletic competitions, sailing regattas, paintball trips, and weapons training.
