National NROTC scholarships are awarded to outstanding high school seniors who wish to enter the naval service as commissioned officers in the US Navy or Marine Corps. The application typically opens in April of a candidate's junior year and closes in January of their senior year. Applications are considered on a rolling basis and scholarships are awarded based on academic record, test scores, leadership and athletics, an interview, and more whole-candidate criteria. Selected students must pass a medical examination and a physical fitness assessment before the scholarship can be activated. Incoming scholarship recipients will report to Naval Station Great Lakes, IL for an intensive 2.5-week New Student Indoctrination (NSI) in the summer prior to entering college.
