Students in their first or second year of instruction are eligible to join the college program basic course.  Midshipmen in the basic course are issued all necessary uniforms and participate in naval science courses, physical training, and leadership lab along with the scholarship midshipmen.  Following successful completion of their first full year in the program, college program midshipmen are considered for 3-year scholarships.  If the midshipman did not join the college program until their second year of college or was not awarded a 3-year scholarship in the previous year, the midshipman is then considered for a 2-year scholarship at the end of their second year.
