Academic majors for Navy option NROTC midshipmen are classified into three tiers.

• Tier 1: Engineering Programs of Navy Interest
• Tier 2: Other Engineering, Math, and Science Programs
• Tier 3: Foreign Language and All Remaining Programs

Engineering programs of Navy interest include aerospace, chemical, electrical, mechanical, and nuclear engineering.  To meet the growing technical demands of the Navy, the vast majority of scholarships are offered to Tier 1 and Tier 2 applicants.

It is much easier for midshipmen to change major if the new major is in the same tier as or a higher tier than the major their scholarship was awarded on.  Additionally, higher tier majors are given slight preference during warfare community assignments prior to commissioning.

Marine option midshipmen do not have a major tier system.
